“Rikki-tikki-Tavi” – Rudyard Kipling


Summary

In “Rikki-tikki-tavi,” a mongoose named Rikki is adopted by a human family and becomes their protector. He battles deadly snakes—Nag and Nagaina—who threaten the family and the other animals in the garden. With bravery and cleverness, Rikki defeats them both, ensuring the safety of everyone. Plot element

Exposition - Rikki-tikki is washed out of his burrow by a flood and taken in by a human family in India. He quickly becomes a loyal protector of the house and garden.

 

Rising action - Rikki learns about Nag and Nagaina, the cobra couple who want to kill the humans so they can rule the garden. He fights and kills a small snake named Karait to protect Teddy. He listens to plans and prepares to fight Nag and Nagaina.

 

Climax - Rikki kills Nag in the bathroom to protect the family. He then follows Nagaina to her nest, where she is threatening Teddy.

 

Resolution - Rikki destroys Nagaina’s eggs and kills her after a fierce battle in her underground nest. The garden is safe again, and Rikki is celebrated as a hero.

 

Analysis & Feelings

This story is exciting and full of action. I admired Rikki’s bravery and determination, even when facing deadly enemies. Kipling uses animal characters to teach values like courage, loyalty, and self-sacrifice. Rikki’s fight with Nagaina was especially intense and showed how even a small creature can make a big difference. I felt proud of Rikki and relieved when the family was safe. It’s a classic good-versus-evil story with strong moral lessons.
